Our copyright and intellectual property meeting last July was one of our most highly attended and while we covered a lot, we left much unsaid! On Wednesday, March 27th, New Media Rights joins us again to continue the conversation. We will talk about copyright law on a more advanced level, including a discussion about licensing and fair use.
Plus we will have a big picture discussion on what creative contracts should and should not include to protect your interest and your copyright. You’ve probably seen the terms “indemnification” and “representations and warranties” -- what do these legalese terms mean to you?
Staff Attorney Erika Lee of New Media Rights will be one of our speakers. New Media Rights is an intellectual property, privacy, and tech law non-profit based here in San Diego and they provide legal services, educational resources and public policy advocacy for creators, entrepreneurs, and internet users. They are an independently funded program of California Western School of Law. The free resources they offer are incredible. Check out their website in advance of our meeting!
Plus, Brian Douglass, founder of Beneficent Media, will talk about the practicalities of running a video production business. From taxes and insurance, to employees vs. independent contractors, to ownership challenges of equipment and a production studio, Brian will share the inside story.
Brian’s broadcast and producer experience includes 20+ years as President and owner of digital OutPost, a San Diego video production company; Video Production Director for GTE; Chief Video Engineer at a broadcast rental company; and a broadcast/audio technician for one of the largest rental and stage companies in San Diego. He is an accomplished, award winning producer/storyteller, photographer/videographer, and broadcast/audio technician. Brian has a BA in Communications from California State University, Chico.
